New York City Proposes New Cleaning Regulations

Both supplies and equipment are required to have a lower environmental impact under the rules. Bathroom cleaners, degreasers, general purpose cleaners, and glass cleaners will need to meet standards put in place by either the Green Seal program, the EPA’s program, or New York State’s green cleaning program, all of which require products to release fewer fumes. Air fresheners also face regulation, and will be limited in the amount of allowable volatile organic compounds. All disinfectants and sanitizers used need to be registered under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. The code also requires that during the period of transitioning products, all staff must be trained in sustainable practices and use of the new products. This is part of a larger effort on the part of the city to improve the health of city employees by reducing toxicity and preserving natural resources within city workplaces.
