Paycheck Fairness Act Defeated in Senate

The Paycheck Fairness Act was defeated last week, as expected, by a Republican filibuster. The bill, aimed at combatting disparities in pay among men and women, would have barred retaliation by employers against workers who inquired about such disparities. It would also have allowed punitive damages in equal-pay suits where large discrepancies in salary existed between male and female employees in similar positions. Debate over the bill had been split along partisan lines from the beginning, with Democrats and the President supporting it as essential to ensuring equality in the workplace, and Republicans and the business community decrying the bill as excessively burdensome for employers.
